Conceptualised for utilizing the vast pool of knowledge, experience and technical know-how of the retired scientists of DRDO for the benefit of DRDO.

DRDO recognized IDST as a "Deemed Academic Institution" for the purpose of acquisition of professional service from IDST.

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, have accorded recognition to IDST as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) till 31 March 2022.

• To contribute as a second line "solution provider" to DRDO laboratories.
• Consultancy and technical advice related to specific projects.
• To assist DRDO in providing in-depth training to personnel on specialized topics on 'as required' basis.
• Independent verification and validation (IV & V) of software packages.
• In-depth analysis and generation of reports on areas of work that may be specified by the laboratory.
• Design and development of sub-systems.
• Providing specific expertise in different areas of DRDO activities where shortage of expertise is felt.
• Any other specific problem solving / bottleneck removal / tasks specified by DRDO from time to time.
• To bring out publications, journals, books, research papers on any scientific and research subjects connected with defence research.
• To undertake, organize, convene, conduct, hold, participate and facilitate studies, discussions, conferences, workshops, seminars, consultancy and research in matters relating to scientific research.
• To promote, compile and publish research studies and statistics related to DRDO
• To furnish information to, and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas amongst members by various means including publication of books, papers, journals, reports and proceedings, treatises or communications.
• To establish and maintain library or libraries.
• To collaborate and cooperate with other national and international professional associations or bodies, whether incorporated or not, whose objects are altogether, or in part, similar to those of the institute.

"While IDST continues to focus on its role as a Second Line Service Provider to DRDO, it is also planning to broaden its spectrum of activities by participating in other emerging opportunities in the Science and Technology sector. With this aim, IDST is planning to take active part in indigenous development as part of the Defence Acquisition Programmes and lead-in projects for Technology Development. IDST also perceives opportunities for enablingfocussed updating of serving as well as retired scientists,by keepingthem abreast of latest developments in various technology areas. In addition to planning courses and lectures for the purpose, setting up an institute may also be considered in future."

Directorate of Public Interface (DPI), DRDO Head Quarters, generates awareness about DRDO's activities and builds positive image of the organization among key stake holders such as Users, Academia, Industry, Students, as well as General Public and Media.

DPI has called upon IDST members to contribute Popular Science Articles about the activities and achievements of DRDO and its Products / Services / Technologies / Infrastructure. DPI feels that IDST members with vast experience and expertise in Defence R&D can make valuable contribution by authoring such articles.

DPI will facilitate in publishing them in appropriate Journals / Magazines / Newspapers. DRDO has a provision of recognising such valuable contribution with a token honorarium.

President, IDST Central Council, desires that IDST members should utilize this opportunity to write articles based on their experience in DRDO Project Activities / Product Development, as requested by Directorate of Public Interface and submit the same through their respective IDST Regional Council.
