Under “Make In India” programme, Defence R&D and Defence Production activities are accelerated. A need was felt to create trained manpower in Defence Technologies specially at the entry level. With this aim, some academic courses in Defence Technology and Defence Management at Undergraduate and Post Graduate level are conceived. Students so qualified will be an asset and have better job opportunities in DRDO, PSUs and Private Industry engaged in Defence R&D and production activities. . This initiative was started in 2020.

 

2020-21

1. Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Government of Gujarat / Concerned universities and IDST on 03 March 2020 for the purpose of “Exchange of Knowledge towards enhancing the Capacity and Quality of Students, Faculty members, and other Stakeholders of the Education and Civil society ecosystems for their contribution to the Aerospace & Defence, Homeland security and Allied fields.”

Under this MOU, 12 Masters courses were planned at Institute of Defence Studies & Research (IDSR) GU, Ahmedabad and an Elective subject of Basics of Defence Technologies for 3^rd and 4^th year students pursuing at Institute of Infrastructure Technology Research and Management (IITRAM), Gandhinagar.

 

The following five courses with their course strength mentioned took off at IDSR in 2020.

First course at IIT RAM started in 2020-21 with course strength of 204 students.

 

 

 

2. DRDO initiated conduct of regular “ Tech Course in Defence Technology” at various Institutes in India with collaborative effort of DRDO, AICTE and Industries. The syllabus is jointly prepared by DRDO and AICTE.

Main thesis work is envisaged in DRDO labs, Defence PSUs & Private Industries.

The syllabus covers 28 Compulsory and 25 Elective courses.

In the first phase, 13 Compulsory courses and 19 elective courses were introduced.

Faculties from DRDO/IDST, DAE, CSIR & industries shall participate with overall responsibility with IDST.

6 courses naming Combat Vehicle Engineering; Aerospace Technology; Communication Systems & Sensors; Directed Energy Technology, High Energy Materials Technology and Naval Technology  commenced in the first batch of 2021.
